Meet Charlotte Edwards. She is a 12 year old girl from Wigan who only started her triathlon experience in 2014. She was already a talented Wigan Scheme swimmer and was doing some running with Wigan Harriers but when she arrived at Wigan Tri Club she hadn’t ridden a bike before. She very quickly showed her metal. In the first race she competed in, she came 4th overall and it was the first time she had been on her bike! She started to work on her cycling with Wigan Tri Club and by her third race she was winning outright. By the end of 2014, she was holding the second fastest bike split and was getting quicker every time.
The Dave Hitchen Fund has helped Charlotte purchase a new bike. The Bike cost was £1400.00 and the Fund donated £1000.00 towards it with Winstanley Bikes funding the remaining £400.00 (together with a £10 donation from triathlon legend and Wigan Tri Club coach, Mr Ste Hilton!)
Charlotte’s goals for 2016 are to win the T3 junior series and meet the criteria for the North West Academy Selection. We hope to keep you updated with her progress as the year goes on.
The Dave Hitchen Fund was established to help support talented athletes within the North West. Funds can go towards event entries, race equipment, travel expenses, ongoing training costs etc.
The fund was set up specifically to support athletes within the sports of cycling and triathlon who have the potential to compete at an elite level in their chosen sport. In particular, the fund supports those families who do not have sufficient income to cover costs such as those outlined above.
